SaladOne thing my patients and I talk about a lot is the concept of eating right. And it really isn’t surprising, considering all the conflicting information out there on the topic.

In general, I advise them to follow the current USDA dietary guidelines as far as what to eat. They were recently updated, so if you haven’t looked at them for awhile, it’s a good place to start.

What to Look For on Food Labels

food labelIf you find yourself confused when looking over a food label to determine if something is a “good choice” or not, you aren’t alone.

By law, food labels list the number of calories per serving, the number of servings per package, the amount of macronutrients in the item (fat, protein, and carbohydrates) along with the amount of any significant vitamins or minerals, and a list of ingredients.

Could “Sweet Taxes” Fight Obesity?

You may have heard of several recent initiatives attempting to tax sugary drinks like soda to try and curb the skyrocketing obesity rates.

Similar to so-called “sin taxes” already in place on items such as tobacco and alcohol, such a tax could raise billions of dollars to help fight obesity, proponents argue. Increased prices, about 6 cents a can, might encourage consumers to reach for a healthier beverage option instead.
